What makes flowers from our farm different from those you grow in your garden? We work hard to encourage our plants to grow long, straight stems. There are several techniques we use to help the flowers achieve their full potential. But one of the most effective is netting!
Here we are working in the lisianthus patch.
The netting we use is TENAX Hortonova brand. It’s a plastic grid that must be held in tension by stakes — two stakes are suspended horizontally at either end to hold tension, and the remaining stakes we drive into the ground. We set a pair of stakes approximately every 10 feet. The flowers find their way through the grid as they grow!
With the netting, the lisianthus will be much more resilient in wind storms, and as their heads become heavy with the weight of developing petals, they’ll be less likely to topple over. We can’t wait to see these rose-like blooms unfurl this year.
